INTER-CLUB GOLF Russley Sweeps Ahead In Woodward Cup

Russley’s dominance of the senior inter-club golf competition for the Woodward Cup seems certain to be carried into its fourth successive year, judging by results in the third and fourth rounds at Templeton yesterday.

The club’s A team —which includes four of the five present Rose Bowl players—won twice without the loss of a match. They gave Russley three successive 8-0 victories in the competition. The great strength of the club was underlined by the effort of the B team beating Christchurch A in a closefought fourth round game. Avondale, however, remained only half a point behind Russley A by winning both its matches yesterday. The two sides will meet in the sixth round next month. Points after four rounds, with games won in parenthsis, are: Russley A 4 (295), Avondale 3| (18|), Waitikiri (17|), Christchurch A 2 (17), Russley B lj (131), Harewood 1 (12), Christchurch B 1 (10), Kaiapoi 1 (10). Team Full Of Talent The Russley A team must be one of the strongest club combinations in the country. The aggregate handicaps of the eight players is only three, an average of less than 0.4 a man. and the team has no less a figure than T. M. Stout, winner of several provincial titles at No. 8. Yesterday afternoon, the side gave full expression to its talents by crushing Christchurch B by one of the biggest margins recorded in the Woodward Cup. The average winning figure was six holes a man, with J. R. Broadhurst beating his opponent on the eleventh green, J. F. Logie, A. K. Hynd and Stout winning on the twelfth, and R. K. Atkinson and E. H. M. Richards on the thirteenth. All the players produced scoring close to par, with Stout finishing three under. This was a not inconsiderable feat, for Templeton, like the other Christchurch courses, had been well soaked by rain over several days. But the greens gave the players fine putting surfaces. R. C. Murray. Russley’s No. 1. played impressively to beat his fellow Freyberg player, D. R. Hope (Harewood), by a convincing margin in one of the main games of the day. But Hope’s match against R. M. Farrant (Waitikiri) was an even more absorbing encounter, which held added interest because of Farrant’s strong but unsuccessful bid for Rose Bowl selection this year. Second Fine Victory After a keen, cut and thrust struggle, Farrant went to the last tee with a one-hole lead, and cemented his advantage by holding a chip shot. This was his second important victory of the competition: in the first round he beat Murray. R. B. Townsend was back in form to lead Avondale to two victories. He was two under par in beating his old adversary, M. W. Stanley (Kaiapoi). and was level with par in his win against A. T. Baxendine (Russley B). Avondale again showed strength in the tail—the last four men in the order did not lose a game. Harewood was the unluckiest team of the day. It carried the fight to Russley A, only to lose 8-0. But five of the games were particularly close, and th? result did not reflect the spirit and ability shown by the youthful Harewood side. The most surprising result was Russley B’s win against Christchurch A. Baxendine showed the way with a display of flawless golf against I. D. Dobson, whose steadiness was not sufficient to swing the match his wav. Baxendine had two splendid twos on his card, one the result of a 20ft putt, the other when he holed a chip. He was two under par at the end. Back From Three Down W. K. Hitchon, with surer putting, gained an upset win

against the Canterbury representative, M. R. Blank, to put Russley B in a strong position. With the games score level, D. G. Crombie enjoyed the luxury of having two putts from, five feet to beat E. S. Henderson on the last green and seal the victory for Russley B. Crombie deserved this moment of satisfaction, for he had fought back from a three-hole deficit after 11 holes. One of Kaiapoi’s strongest mainstays for several years, J. E. Monk, had a most successful day, his two victims including Dobson, who had to bow to Monk's steadier putting. And Stanley showed that he is still an accomplished player by convincingly beating Blank. Results:— Russley A 8, Harewood 0 R. C. Murray beat D. R. Hope, 5 and 4: E. H. M. Richards beat J. A.
