Warau Bridge
Sir,—The reply by the district highways engineer to H. M. Oatway’s letter regarding the delay in installing traffic lights at the Waiau Bridge says: “We have four quotes for the lights but there has been some difficulty with the design." Does this mean that quotes are given before the design of the lights is finalised? Is the delay in the design due to light designers being enticed away from the country by the brain drain? Can it be that the delay is caused by procrastination on! the part of bureaucrats? As the Ministry has failed to install the lights before Easter as promised, it is to be hoped that it will have officials at the bridge during peak hours to help eliminate the serious traffic jams which occur over every hbliday period.—Yours, etc., D. G. H. BUSH. Parnassus, April 10, 1968. (Mr D. B. Dallas, District Commissioner of Works, replies: “The comments on Mr Oatway’s letters should have read: ‘We have called for quotes for the lights. . . .’ Design was completed before these quotes were called. This department did make signalmen available to assist the | flow of traffic over the Easter
period, and we understand that there were no difficulties.”]
