Herd To Be Sold

(N.Z. Press Association) WHAKATANE, April 19. Salt water has forced a Whakatane farmer, Mr C. J. Zonneveld, to sell his entire dairy herd of 190 cows. Mr Zonneveld farms about 240 acres, most of which was damaged by sea water which flowed on to his property when high seas lashed the Bay of Plenty coastline last week. Parts of his farm were under three feet of water and pasture on the higher ground was ruined by salt spray.

The property has been under extensive development for the last three years, during which production improved from 27,0001 b butterfat to nearly 75,0001 b estimated this season. Since the storm, the entire herd has been dried off and more than 90 bales of hay have been fed daily to supplement the loss of pasture. Mr Zonneveld estimates that it will be Impossible to milk on the property until the pasture recovers and this could take 12 months.
