MAGISTRATE’S COURT Youths Fined $20 For “Nasty Assault”
Two youths employed by the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board who assaulted a fellow worker were each fined $2O by Mr W. F. Brown, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Before the Court were Benjamin Poutu Cooper Kohi, aged 20, and Leslie James Lewis, aged 19. Both pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant F. G. Mulcare said that about 10.05 p.m. on April 17, Anthony J. Mcßae went to 'Kohl's room at the nassella tussock camp at Waiau and there Kohi said he wanted a fight. He then hit Mcßae in the face. Mcßae said he did not want to fight. Lewis came along and kicked Mcßae in the groin and thigh. When later interviewed by the police neither of the accused could give any explanation for the assault. They said they were both under the influence of drink at the time. “This is a particularly nasty assault; next time you will go to prison,” said the Magistrate. CONFESSED Kevin Raymond Purtle, aged 19, a freezing worker, was convicted and remanded to April 26 for sentence when he pleaded guilty to stealing a transistor radio at Christchurch on April 10 and to a charge of burglary at Waikari on the same day.
Senior-Sergeant Mulcare said Purtle came to the police on April 11 and confessed to both crimes. THEFT For stealing two rear vision mirrors from a car sales yard in Christchurch on April 18, Trevor Desmond Painter, aged 19, an apprentice joiner, was convicted and remanded to April 26 for sentence. Painter, who was not represented, pleaded not guilty. TWO CHARGES Robert William Roxburgh, aged 20, a drivers’ assistant, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft on April 18 and was remanded to April 26. The items stolen were a rug valued at $lO and a transistor radio valued at $l5.
