Use Of Force On Rhodesia Urged
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 18. African and Asian members of the Security Council today sought backing for their proposal that Britain use force against Rhodesia.
A draft resolution, which would also instruct all States to make an immediate complete break of economic and other relations with the Smith regime was being formally presented to the council this morning. Diplomatic sources said the five sponsors—Algeria, Ethiopia, India, Pakistan and Senegal—had virtually no
hope that it would be accepted.
The Afro-Asians wanted to make their position crystal clear however, even if they finally had to accept somewhat less stringent measures. The sources said it was expected that they would agree to further private talks and not press for a vote on today’s resolution. During a three-week recess, council members have been consulting privately in hopes of achieving unanimous agreement on a resolution which would mean a total ban on trade with Rhodesia. But Britain has refused to consider using force to topple the 30-month-old breakaway Government in Salisbury, though reported ready to endorse comprehensive and mandatory econoinic sanctions. x Britain also wants the resolution to spell out very clearly the measures which governments should take to make the sanctions effective.
