Civil Defence
Sir, —Obviously "Volunteer” is more interested in finding excuses for civil defence than he is in having its proven failure corrected. When it is remembered that people were evacuated in Sumner at 4 a.m. on Friday, Mr Kirk’s concern over the complete absence of civil defence or anyone else at 2.30 a.m. was well justified. Most of the Hooded area is in Mr Kirk’s electorate and he was out all night looking after the people he represents. It is a pity that more who were paid to do this job were in bed asleep.—Yours, etc., CONCERNED. April 17, 1968.
