Unwanted Babies
Sir, —The address of Miss Fraser, matron of St Helens Hospital, makes very sad reading. On the one hand some unmarried mothers choose to keep their babies and their decision can be honoured. On the other hand, through the shortage of adoptive parents, some girls may be forced to keep their babies against their will. These girls must be given help, as in some countries overseas, by the provision of hostels with day-care nurseries enabling the t other to go out to work as well as look after her child. This makes it possible for the mother eventually to be married, giving the child a normal home with its own mother. This will be possible only if society is prepared to have a new and more compassionate approach to these problems. It is fair to say that our young people can be helped through education to a more responsible attitude to love, sex. and parenthood. —Yours, etc., ENID M. DAWSON. April 18, 1968.
