No Bishopdale Playground
A “Disneyland” playground for children cannot be built on vacant commercial land at the corner of Farrington Avenue and Raleigh Street, on the Bishopdale shopping centre block.
In reaching this decision last evening, the Waimairi County Council set up a subcommittee to see whether it could help the playground sponsor, the Papanui-Belfast Jaycee, to find another site. “Playing areas should be near homes,” said Cr R. C. Neville. “It would be wrong to draw children to a playground at a commercial centre.” The council’s town-planning officer (Mr R. M. Parker) said the land should be kept for commercial purposes. There were plans to extend the business area, and this would need more car-park space.
