Prison Chaplain New Bishop Of Aotearoa
(N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, April 18. The Rev. Manu Augustus Bennett, chaplain at the Waikeria Youth Centre, has been appointed Bishop of Aotearoa. The son of a former Maori bishop, the Rt Rev* F* A. Bennett, he succeeds the Rt Rev. W. N. Panana, who retired on February 29. The appointment was announced today by the Archbishop of New Zealand (the Most Rev. N. A. Lesser). Dr Bennett was bom in Rotorua and is a member of a large family. In 1944 he
married Mrs Kathleen Clarke, of Te Puke, and they have one daughter,, who is a student nurse. Dr Bennett received his education at Te Aute College. Victoria University and the University of Hawaii, gaining B.Sc. and D.D. degrees. He was made deacon in 1939 and ordained priest in 1944 In the Second World War he was a chaplain with the N.Z.EF. Dr Bennett has been a member of the Ngarimu Scholarship Fund Board, a member of the Maori Advisory Committee to the South Auckland Education Board, a member of the Church Army Trust Board, and the first president of the Association of Maori University graduates. The date of the consecra tion of the new Bishop of Aotearoa has not been fixed.
