Flame Tests By Institute
The serious flammability of some materials sold for night attire—including some said to be flame-proof—was demonstrated in tests conducted in the Christchurch laboratory of the Consumers' Institute yesterday. A flannelette nightdress was flaming up the front 15 seconds after lighting and it was almost completely destroyed in imin 30sec. A “flame-proof’ material from England did not ignite when a lighted taper was held to its edge for Imin 30sec. A New Zealand-made “flame-proof’ material flamed up the front of the garment in 15 seconds and was almost completely burned in Imin 30sec. The demonstration yesterday was given without official comment The technical adiser to the Consumers’ Institute (Mr T. R. Pollard) said the complete run of tests had still to be completed and the results would be published in the institute’s journal, “Consumer.”
