Peninsula Dries Out After Storm
Banks Peninsula settlements were drying out yesterday after the recent storms and the chief service still out of action was the Little River School.
The school will be closed all this week because almost a foot of silt covers the grounds, and its septic tanks and drainage are not working. The 'school is dosed chiefly for health reasons. Yesterday the silt was drying out rapidly and arrangements had been made for front-end loaders to put the silt in trucks for removal. Silt blocking many septic tanks in the area also dried out quickly and could be lifted off easily, one resident said. “Driving through Little River, you would scarcely be-
lieve the town had been flooded,” he said. Silt had dried into the grass and debris against fences and broken trees were the chief signs of damage. The two stores had been cleaned out and were serving customers yesterday. The Post Office was in full operation but some telephone faults were still being reported. The Anglican Church, which lost more than half its roof, had been covered. Port Levy was also recovering, although Mr C. E., Jenkins, who had to evacuate his home for the second time in five days, was still not back.
