SCHOOLS DAMAGED

About 40 of the Canterbury Education Board’s schools reported damage caused by high winds and rain between Wednesday night and the week-end. Tiles, iron, and fabric had lifted from roofs, water had got into classrooms and offices and fences were down. Rain had poured on to desks and floors.

The South New Brighton School was closed yesterday for repairs but it will be open today. The Little River School has almost a foot of silt on the grounds from flooding and will be closed for the rest of the week. The Education Board’s maintenance staff worked hard on Tuesday and Wednesday to make urgent repairs where required and will do other work as soon as possible.
