Filly For $33,000 <N.Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY An Asian betting syndicate went on a buying spree on the first day of the Sydney yearling thoroughbred sales. that rivalled the performance of the Australian Foyster family at the Trentham sales. The syndicate paid $93,800 for six yearlings on Tuesday. It paid the Australian and New Zealand record price of $33,000 for a filly. The well-known Melbourne bloodstock agent, Mr F. Ford, made the purchase on behalf of the Asians. The filly which is a halfsister to the well-performed gallopers, Flying Gauntlet and Flying Fable, is by the English stallion, Gaul, from Miss Pilot. Five colts and three fillies bv Gaul fetched a total of $83,250 at an average of $10,406. This is the first crop of yearlings by Gaul offered in the sale ring. The previous record for a yearling filly was $30,000 Mr S. Fox and the Foyster family made only four purchases each. A total of $21,800 was spent by Mr Fox and $22,100 by the Foysters. The trainer. T. J. Smith, paid $76,100 to secure 14 yearlings for his clients. A total of 158 yearlings was sold for $483,950, an average of $3063. This was well up on the first day last year, when 150 were sold for $396,007, an average of $2640. Easier Course Temporary fences will replace Cutts’s. the kennels double, and the big fence at the top of the straight in the Haast Steeplechase at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Riccarton on May 21. There will be only one fence in front of the stands, replacing a double. The distance of the race will be two miles and a half, and there will be 12 jumps.
