Fonteyn Denies Kidnap Plot
(N. 2. P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 16. A London solicitor said today that Dame Margot Fonteyn stopped payment on cheques to a detective agency for work in supplying six mercenaries to kidnap Panama’s police chief. But her agent, Joan Thring, said the ballerina had not hired any one and the Panamanian Embassy in London
said it thought the “plot” must be a joke. The solicitor, Mr David Jacobs, said Dame Margot Fonteyn hired his client to supply six Britons to take part in the “plot." Four were now under house arrest in Panama, he said. Dame Margot Fonteyn was quoted today in London newspapers as saying that the police chief. General Bolwar Ballarino, was to have been kidnapped if her husband, the Panamian politician, Dr Roberto Arias, was arrested. According to the newspapers, Dr Arias, who was paralysed during an attempt on his life four years ago in Panama, was not arrested and the “plot” did not take place. Dame Margot Fonteyn was not available for comment tonight. She will leave for the United States tomorrow.
