(New Zealand Press Association)

HAMILTON, April 17.

Supplies of a new antibiotic, which has resulted in a major advance against mastitis in Britain, are being flown to New Zealand.

Advance supplies of the drug are being tested in Waikato by the Department of Agriculture. The new treatment was developed in Britain by the National Institute for Research in Dairying, and Beecham Research Laboratories. A New Zealand officer for the firm, Mr M. Dinn, has returned to Waikato from Britain after a five-week course on the new preventive treatment.

Mastitis the most costly of all dairy cow diseases, is estimated to cost the industry s4om a year in Britain and about sBm to slom in New Zealand. It was hoped that the treatment, which has reduced mastitis losses in Britain up to 75 per cent, would be applied in New Zealand during the off-season. Mr Dinn said. The treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria which are not caught by other preventive techniques. The cost per cow is about $3. «
