Negro Boy Shot
(N Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 16. The son of the associate national director of the Congress of Racial Equality (C.0.R.E.) was fatally shot in the back last night by a Negro, police said.
Police said they were questioning a suspect who lived in the Bronx home in front of which Roy Innis, aged 13, and three friends w-ere playing. Police declined to discuss the shooting but the youth’s father talked with reporters. “The kids were playing in the street close to the house and some man, apparently a resident or someone, became angry,” Innis said. “He came out of the house and shot him.”
Young Innis was dead on arrival at hospital. Mr Innis was promoted to the No. 2 position in the national C.O.R.E. organisation behind Mr Floyd McKissick several months ago. Mr Innis also is chairman of the Harlem C.O.R.E. chapter and has been active in many community action programmes.
