RECORD ENTRY AT MACKENZIE SHOW

(From Our Own Reporter)

TIMARU, April 16.

The Mackenzie County Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s seventieth annual Highland show was held at Fairlie on Monday.

The show was officially opened by the member of Parliament for Ashburton (Mr R. L. G. Talbot). He was welcomed by the president (Mr G. Shaw). Gate takings amounted to $1758 compared with £877 in 1967—a drop of $2OO. A record entry of 3266 was catalogued, according to the joint secretaries (Messrs J. A. Gilchrist and S. F. Walker). The previous best was 2843 entries in 1966. Entries were not numerous as last year, and farmers should display more interest in this section, commented the judge of the wool classes (Mr C. F. B. Clarke, of Timaru).

Considering the poor season, wool opened up in a fairly good condition, the outstanding entry being a fine Merino ram fleece shown by J. C. Sanders and Son, of Alexandra. This was of good length and beautifully crimped, said Mr Clarke. Entries were good in the strong combing Merino section, said the judge (Mr G. HunterWeston. of Cave). There were some outstanding sheep and local competitors put out several good sheep, which was noteworthy, bearing in mind the conditions throughout the district. He said that Smith Brothers’ supreme champion one-shear strong combing ewe was a good animal. The poll Merinos were also good sheep, with good body length, and well covered with wool.

Mr G. E. Gumbrell (Geraldine), a sheep judge, described the champion South Suffolk ewe as an exceptionally fine sheep as was the ram of the same breed.

The Perendaie sheep, which made their debut at the show, were described as of excellent quality and a good representation of the breed by the judge (Mr P. N. Lyders, of Dunedin). He said that the sheep compared more than favourably with those entered at metropolitan shows. In the Cheviot section, the quality was also of a high standard. particularly the champion sheep entered by Mr D. Taylor, of Albury. which was outstanding. Mr T. C. Grigg, of Hororata, who judged the light horses, referred to the high standard in the hacks. The champion hack, Night Call, shown by Mrs C. L. Meyer, was outstanding, very free-moving, and hard to fault on conformation, said the judge. Mr Grigg also judged the handy hunter competition. He said that few competitors opened the gate with ease—which indicated the reliance of the farming community generally on utility vehicles and other forms of transport. The judge of the beef cattle section <Mr E. M. Williamson. (Waimate), said the entries in the breeding cow and calf section were of a very high standard. The winning pen, exhibited by Mr E. G. Butters was outstanding—particularly the calf, which had also won the award for the best animal in the yard. Mr H. M. Greenaway (Ashburton) judged the dairy cattle. Entries were fair, but the standard was high. The cattle generally were brought out in good condition, said Mr Greenaway. He was especially pleased with the Jersey section.
