Milk Sachets Discussed

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 16.

If sachets are to be introduced in New Zealand for the distribution of pasteurised milk the public must still be given a choice of container, says the annual report of the New Zealand Milk Board, issued today.

The report says that there has been interest in the possibilities of the plastic sachets used extensively in France and other European countries. “The sachets are more nearly competitive in cost with bottles than are cartons and as containers they have

both advantages—for example, single use only and no need to worry about returns and sterilisation, lightness, etc.— and disadvantages—for example, non-rigidity for pouring, some risk of puncture, etc. “How the sachets will be accepted by the New Zealand public is somewhat uncertain. “The board has set conditions which should operate should the sachets be introduced. “The main features are that until 'it has been demonstrated that the sachets are as acceptable to the public as bottles, the public must be given a right of choice of container; and the board will be prepared to set special prices and allowances to cover the special costs, if any, of getting the milk to the public. “But where there could be some off-setting savings in cost if the public were given no right of choice, then the board will be prepared to fix special allowances without these having to be recovered in higher consumer prices," said the report
