OIL POLLUTION UNDER CONTROL

WELLINGTON, April 16.
Although the Wahine was carrying nearly 400 tons of fuel and there was a considerable amount seeping out, the situation was well under control, the Secretary of Marine (Mr R. N. Kerr) said today.
He is chairman of the Oil s Pollution Committee set up i some months ago after the I Torrey Canyon disaster in Britain to prevent such an occurrence in New Zealand or to deal with one. Mr Kerr said that soon after it was reported that oil was coming from the Wahine the committee met in his office and a subcommittee called on the general manager and chief engineer of the Wellington Harbour Board. , “We had stacks of frozen i detergent distributed around , the country and also sawdust I should it be necessary,” he i said. moana. The detergent was being used “with discretion.”
