Gas And Oil Traces In Murchison Well

NELSON, April 16.
Small but “promising” flows of gas and traces of oil have been encountered in the Australian Oil Corporation’s Blackwater No. 1 well being drilled near Murchison.
The corporation’s area manager for Australia and New Zealand (Mr J. Blumer) said the flow of gas and trace of oil was recorded on Good Friday between 1515 and 1550 feet.

“No formal testing has been done at this stage,” he said, “but sufficient gas is present in the drilling fluid (liquid mud) to be burnt from a flare pipe connected to the well head,*’ he said.
“Until formal testing is carried out it is impossible to say whether these flows are of any economic importance. “If we continue to get promising flows like this, the company may consider bringing hole testing equipment to New Zealand. At. present there is no suitable tester in the country.” On Sunday, a second “pocket of gas” was recorded
