Devaluation Boosts Exports By Air
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, April 16.
Air freighted exports to Australia have soared since New Zealand devalued the dollar last November.
New Zealand is now sending nearly 2} tons of air cargo to Australia for every ton flown in. The figures were about even a year ago. In the first three months after devaluation, Air New Zealand carried more than 1000 tons of air cargo to Australia—an increase of almost 150 per cent over the same period of 1966-67. Export figures show that manufactured goods contributed largely to the increase. Carpet shipments increased to more than 100 tons and some 40 tons of electrical equipment, including freezers and refrigerators were also flown to Australia.
In January alone, 14 tons of dressmaking patterns, a new export item, were flown across the Tasman. Perishables sent by air included more than 100 tons of fish and almost 200 tons of fruit and vegetables.
