Two Maori Schools To Amalgamate
(New Zealand Pr&M Association)
AUCKLAND, April 16.
Queen Victoria School, Auckland, and Hukarere School, Napier, are to be amalgamated and will transfer to a new site in Hamilton, the Bishop of Auckland (the Rt Rev. E. A. Cowing) announced today.
The two Anglican girls’ schools have mainly Maori pupils. Bishop Gowing said that in view of the fact that Queen Victoria School was to move to a new site in Hamilton in the foreseeable future, the board of governors of St Stephen’s and Queen Victoria Schools and the Te Aute Trust Board had agreed that the mutual interests of the two schools would be best served by amalgamation.
“The proposal will mean that it will be possible to provide a wjder curriculum and to increase the staff,” he said. “The new site should prove very satisfactory as far as the Maori people are concerned. “It is almost midway between the existing schools and is readily accessible by air, rail and road to the main centres of Maori population.”
“An additional factor is its proximity to the Waikato University and teachers’ college.
