Melbourne Has Hectic Boom

MELBOURNE, April 15. Illustrating the extent of the mining boom in recent months, the value of shares traded on the Stock Exchange of Melbourne in the six months to March 31 was 16 per cent higher than for the entire 1966-67 year—itself a record period. The meteoric boost occurred in the mining sector where value of shares traded leapt from S3om in the six months to March 1967 to $194.7m in the latest six months. In terms of volume, the number of mining shares traded bounded from 24.5 m to 113.7 m. The mining flurry contributed largely to the gain in value of all shares traded in the period from $llO 6m to 8425.9m —a rise of 285 per cent. It compares with the previous record of $367.7m for the entire 196667 year. In terms of volume, trading of all shares rose from 87m to 223.4 m.
