SPUN OFF TRACK
Rindt Came Back To Win
(N.Z.PA.-Reuter — Copyright, ANDOVER (Hampshire). The Austrian, J. Rindt, driving a Brabham, recovered from a spectacular spin to win the international formula two motor race, counting towards the European championship, yesterday. Rindt won at an average speed of 109.42 m.p.h. and set a fastest lap of 111.60 m.p.h. in the first major event on the new Thruxton circuit. The French champion, J. P. Beltoise, in a Matra, was second and D. Bell (Britain), in a Brabham, was third. Just after the halfway mark Rindt’s car struck a patch of oil and hurtled off the track into an advertising hoarding. But he drove out from behind the metal safety barrier and rejoined the race with his previous lead of more than 400 yards reduced to a fraction of a second. Beltoise made a strong effort to overtake Rindt in the closing stages but he eventu-. ally lost contact and the Austrian was well ahead at the finish.
