LOSSES OF $1600
Burglaries And | Thefts Money and goods worth more than $l6OO were stolen in thefts and burglaries reported to the police yesterday. The biggest loss was $864, taken yesterday from the Oriental Cafe, Ltd, 178 High Street. A safe at the premises of Paykel Brothers, Ltd, 96 Tuam Street, was forced open between Thursday and yesterday, and $250 was stolen. A house in Sullivan Avenue was broken into between Friday and Monday and jewellery and clothing worth about $3OO were taken. A washing machine worth $BO was stolen from the premises of New Zealand Homecraft, Ltd, 297 Blenheim Road, between Friday and yesterday: cigarettes and batteries worth $5B were stolen on Monday night from the premises of Halliday Motors, Ltd, 116 Marshland Road: and a bench grinder worth $6B was stolen from the premises of Mesco Riddell and Company, Ltd, 148 Carlyle Street, during the weekend. Other property reported stolen included copper wire worth $6 from W. R. Joy, Ltd, 90 Mowbray Street; $1 from the Aronde Dairy, Ltd, 54 Victoria Street; and $2 from Motor Specialties, Ltd, 111 St Asaph Street.
