India Warns Italy
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW DELHI, April 16. India is understood to have expressed grave concern and issued a warning to Italy about the sale of 100 American M 47 Patton tanks to Pakistan. The Government is believed to have said that although thz tanks may be regarded as replacements, India cannot ignore the fact that they are larger and fitted with more powerful guns than those used against India in the 1965 Kashmir conflict. India has told the Italian Government that any guarantee that the tanks would not be used against India would be ineffectual in the light of past experience. It has objected to the sale on the grounds that the tanks were being sent to an area of tension, and has warned Italy that the deal may affect Indian-Italian relations.
