Girls Singles Winners In Easter Tennis

All the finals of girls’ singles and one doubles in the Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association’s Easter tournament were played at Wilding Park yesterday but the rest of the finals will be completed today.

E. Price, of the Beckenham Club, won the under-17 girls’ singles, S. Moore, the present Canterbury under-15 champion, won the under-15 girls’ singles, and a Malvern player, L Wilson, won the under-13 girls’ singles. As well, Miss Price combined with her singles final victim, G. Iredale, to win the under-17 girls’ doubles in a most successful tournament for her. In the Anal of the under-17 boys’ singles today R. Webster, a member of the Canterbury Slazenger Shield team and this year’s Canterbury under-17 runner-up, will play a fellow Christchurch Boys’ High School pupil, M. Beaumont. Webster won at Easter last year. Both had difficult matches in their semi-finals yesterday. Web ster beat R. Tuck, the Canter bury secondary schools champion, 9-8. Tuck has not a strong service but he places well and he made Webster produce all his considerable ability to return consistently. Beaumont beat B. Smyth, 9-7, but only after he had been

down, 1-5. A left-hander, Beaumont recovered well with strong serving. It was a good win for Beaumont because Smyth was a member of this season’s Slazenger Shield side. Misses Price and Iredale, who won the under-15 section last Easter, had a lot of tennis yesterday but they played an attractive final. Miss Iredale was often the more aggressive but she was also looser and she allowed herself to be passed when she did not move to the ball well enough. Miss Price won, 6-1, 6-3. There was a similar pattern in the under-15 girls final, when Miss Moore beat an Ellesmere player, G. Skilling, 6-2, 6-3. Miss Skilling hit some strong shots and at times looked as If she could gain control but she lost to a more consistent player and a good retriever. The boys finalists in the under-15 grade are T. Mooney and R. Dillon. Mooney won his semi-final without the loss of a game. Two cousins from Malvern, L Wilson, of Kirwee and D. Wilson, of Halkett, battled for the under-13 girls singles. L. Wil son is slightly bigger than her opponent and she had the swifter strokes but she was against a player who retrieved determinedly. They had long rallies before L. Wilson won, 9-5. Today’s under-13 boys finalists are A. James and B. Sanders, who both won their semi-finals very comfortably. Results: UNDER-17 _ , a Boys’ Singles bemi-finals.—M. Beaumont beat B. Smyth. 9 7; R.
