THE SPARTAN, a long-range interceptor missile which has been successfully test-fired at Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. The missile is being developed as part of a United States anti-ballistic missile system. The three-stage Spartan is 55ft long and is made by the McDonnell Douglas Corporation.
