HARD-COURT TENNIS Barry Reaches Men’s Final
(New Zealand Press Association) CAMBRIDGE. J. A. Barry, of Waikato, who won the national men’s tennis singles title in 1954 and 1955, will meet a 23-year-old Aucklander, D. Simmonds, in the New Zealand hard-court men’s singles final at Te Koutu Park, Cambridge, today.
Miss B. Vercoe, of Auckland, and Miss P. Rogan, of North Shore, will contest the women’s final. Simmonds, seeded first, overcame dogged resistance from I. Beverley and the lefthander F. Schwanner to win his place in the final. Barry, a spry veteran of 40, belied his years in eliminating the second seed. J. H. Lock ington, of Auckland, with apparent ease. Barry earlier beat P. Thompson (Auckland) in straight sets. Miss Vercoe kept errors to a minimum in beating Miss S Collins, of Southland, in one semi-final. Miss Rogan was in good form to eliminate the second seeded Miss J. Bloxham (Bay of Plenty) comfortably. Miss Bloxham had a diffi cult struggle to beat Miss B Paterson (Waikato), who has won several Waikato hardcourt titles. Miss Rogan had also reached the women's doubles final in partnership with Miss M. McKegg (Northland). The weather improved yesterday and players had greater demands made of them as the time lost on Saturday and Sunday was made up. Results: Men's Singles Quarter-finals. —D. Simmonds (Auckland) beat I.
