TWO INJURED AT SPEEDWAY
One of the South Island’s most consistent speedcar drivers, Gordon Roxburgh, dislocated his shoulder when he crashed in a novelty motor-cycle race at the Templeton Speedway yesterday afternoon.
He was taken to the Christchurch Hospital and admitted. His condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory. Another competitor, Errol Gluestein, was lucky to escape without serious injury when he crashed heavily in an earlier motor-cycle scratch race. He was carried from the track by ambulance and although he recovered rapidly in the pits was advised to go to hospital to have his shoulder X-rayed. Roxburgh, who finished second in the South Island speedcar championship series, was taking part in frivolities which mark the end of the speedway season. Competitors rode in different classes to those they usually ride in. and he decided to try motor cycle racing. He was well placed on the
first lap when he got into a dangerous speed wobble down the pit straight. He was thrown from the machine and lay on the track for several seconds before struggling to the safety fence. Two St John Ambulance officers dashed to his aid but were unable to get him off the track before the race ended. Gluestein’s crash was more spectacular. He was leading a normal four-lap scratch race when his front wheel hit a rut at the end of the pit straight. He flew over the handlebars and his machine somersaulted to crash inches away from him. He tottered unsteadily to the inside of the track. His machine remained in the middle of the track but nothing hit it.
