Storms Delay Monterey

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 15. The Matson liner Monterey arrived at Auckland eight hours late today after sailing through two tropical cyclones after leaving Tahiti.

She was slowed to about half speed at times during three days of bad weather. Many passengers were seasick on the passage from Rarotonga to Auckland. At least four have decided to leave the ship in Auckland and fly to Sydney rather than risk striking more bad weather. The Monterey’s master (Captain J. R. Caldwell) said that high seas were running for two days. “We had a full gale,” he said. “We reduced -peed and came right through the seas. We had no trouble with the ship and no accidents with passengers.” He said he had not had to alter course to avoid the storms. The delayed arrival in Auckland disrupted plans for tours to Rotorua and Waitomo.
