New Attack Launched
(N .Z .P.A.'Reuter—Copy right) SAIGON, April 14. Ten thousand American para’roopers have launched a huge assault against the Viet Cong forces menacing the vital northern cities of Hue and Quang Tri, the United States Command in Saigon announced today. The operation began on April 1, but news of it was withheld until today. So far, the announcement says, the drive has been characterised by only moderate fighting. The American paratroopers are reported to have killed 503 of the enemy, detained 25 suspects and captured 105 weapons. United States casualties are put at 57 dead and 279 wounded.
The operation is centred in an area nine miles northwest of the old Imperial capital of Hue, where senior United States officers fear the Communists may launch their next big offensive now that the siege of Khe Sanh has been lifted. The enemy is believed to have from 25 to 30 battalions in the area, consisting of perhaps 15,000 to 18,000 men.
