100 Homes In Danger

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, April 14. Hundreds of bags of sand and gravel were being thrown into the break tonight to prevent the Mataura River bursting a flood bank east of Gore. Trucks and drivers from as far away as Waikaka were mobilised, and two jet boats were also standing by.

South Gore took the brunt of the flood. Acres of land in the area of the abattoir were under water and it was necessary to evacuate three or four homes.

However, it was realised tonight that if a break occurred in the flood bank at East Gore about 100 homes would be affected. Teams of workers were to stand by throughout the night to meet any emergency.
