OPENING TO SEA
Lake Level High Plant will be shifted to laumutu, at the south-west end of Lake Ellesmere today, to open the lake to the sea. Because of the flooding in the area, the lake had risen about a foot In a week, the chief engineer of the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr E. B. Dalmer) said last night. Work would begin tomorrow if the weather and sea permitted, he said. Three large bulldozers and a dragline could be used. The lake on Saturday had risen to 3.2 ft above mean sea level, six inches below the opening level for the winter period, he said. The last opening was made on November 24, at 3.Bft, and the lake remained open to the sea for 32 days. In the three weeks before the storm, the average level of the lake was about two feet above sea level, Mr Dalmer said.
