Blew After Gallop
The attractive Southland two-year-old, Volante, blew hard after galloping six furlongs in 1.21 2-5 on the No. 7 grass at Riccarton yesterday. She ran the opening three furlongs in 39 4-5 but her speed dropped away slightly in the straight. A. J. Stokes, who rode in this gallop, has also been engaged to ride her in the Autumn Nursery Handicap on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting on Wednesday. Volante is also an acceptor for today’s Champagne Stakes, but a start for her in the classic was not certain at the weekend.
