Garcon Roux Easily
Garcon Roux confirmed his | position as the top two-year-old ■ of the season, with a stylish ’win in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes at Addington Raceway on Saturday. Those who had backed Garcon Roux down to pay 11.95 for a win were far from happy when he was still back in the middle of the field with two furlongs left. He gave the leaders what appeared to be a hopeless task
with a furlong left, but gradually overhauled Margaret Marie. He headed her about 30 yards from the finish and beat her b> a rapidly-widening margin of three-quarters of a length. A gelding by Garcon Roux from La Mignon, by Light Brigade, Garcon Roux is trained at Yaldhurst by G. B. Noble for Mr R. A. McKenzie, of Welling ton. Noble prepared Royal Minstrel to win the race in 1954 for the late Sir John McKenzie. Garcon Roux has now had fou r wins. “He's just like the old mare 'La Mignon)," said his driver. J. B. Noble, after the race. "He just loafs along and doesn't exert himself in the slightest.” he said. “That was why he drifted early and allowed himself to be pushed back. I was not happy about his chances even with a furlong to run. The others looked to be much too far in front. However, he got there in the end and that is what counts ” Margaret Marie went a splendid race for second. She raced clear when the pacemaker, Frozen, dropped out with a furlong left, but could not contend with Garcon Roux's final sprint. Evette made ground for third a neck back after being awkwardly placed for much of the way. Frozen held on for fourth, but he was four lengths back, clear of Friendly Forbes.
