Record Swim Highlights Tourney

GV.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NTH. A New Zealand record in swimming was the highlight of events on the first day of the New Zealand Universities ’ Easter tournament on Saturday. Swimming almost alone, Miss P. Chapman (Victoria) set a new time of 2min 35.75ec for 220 yards medley, breaking Miss T. K. Shipston’s record of 2min 36.8 sec. However, Miss Chapman’s performance was lust outside the Olympic qualifying time of 2min 34.55ec. Miss Chapman also improved the universities record in the 110 yards backstroke. Other meeting records were set by B. Bond (Auckland) and A.Kindred (Canterbury). Some fast times were registered, and records broken, in the athletics. K. Darling (Otago) won the 3000 metres steeplechase in 9min, 2sec, 24sec faster than the previous record set by the Commonwealth Games champion, R. P. Welsh. F. Woodcock (Otago) added 6jin to his pole vault record and Miss B. Walker (Otago) won the women’s shot put with a new best of 42ft 2jin.

Victoria established early supremacy in the rowing at Wanganui, winning the eights and single sculls and finishing second in the double sculls. Unfavourable conditions delayed the start to the surfing at Castlepoint Beach and only two events were completed in the yachting on the Wanganui River. Results: ATHLETICS Men 100 yards: F.
