Wool Decision Pleases U.K.
(N Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 14. The Wool Commission’s decision to sell part of its stockpile at market rates next season has Been welcomed in Bradford. An editorial in the latest issue of the influential textile journal, “Wool Record,” de-
scribes the announcement as “an unsurprising notice” which demonstrated that the commission was facing the economic facts of life. The editorial maintains the announcement was not a breach of faith with past statements because the new policy would not operate until next season, it says the commission’s description of a controlled flow of stockpiled wool on to the market was as reasonable as it was predictable. The journal favours the commission making private [sales to governments if the
purchases are in addition to normal purchases. “While past talk of a big Russian buy has been scotched, we cannot help feeling the new plans are being angled at the East rather than the West,” says the “Wool Record.”
“This is both fair and sensible if only because the East has long shown a livelier appreciation than the West of wool’s basic qualities. “This may relate to climate, the absence of commercial pressures attached to manmade fibres and other consid-
erations. But it is a market fact and New Zealand cannot be properly rebuked for taking account of it while trying to stay on good terms with her Western friends,” said the publication.
