Top Surf-Riding Title To Gisborne Junior
A Gisborne junior, C. Ransley (Eastern), magnificently won the Del International, the feature event of the New Zealand surf-riding championships at the week-end. W’ith fast footwork and good positioning on waves at times 10ft high. Ransley beat a glamour field, including the national senior champion, W Parkes, and A. Byrne, the 1967 and 1968 junior champion. The international event was moved to the Sumner end on the Scarborough beach after the high tide had flattened out the surf Strong, cold on-shore winds made conditions at times unpleasant. Many of the North Island competitors, in particu lar, were affected by the conditions. In the championship events, Parkes and Byrne gave fine displays of surfing to retain their senior and junior titles respec tively. In the women’s championship. J. Mitchel] (Auckland) gave an equally fine exhibition of controlled surfing in heavy sprayblown waves, to win well with some fast rides. Senior Championship Heat 1: J.
