FENCING TOURNEY

Otago Team Withdraws The triangular fencing tournament held in Christchurch at the week-end was reduced to two provinces when Otago withdrew. Its team could not reach Christchurch because of poor road conditions. The tournament was won by Wellington, but all events were closely contested. The women s foil was decided by a barrage and the men’s sabre on a countback. The men’s epee was one of the most interesting events of the tournament, two-thirds of the bouts going to 5-4, and not one fencer remaining unbeaten. G. Garland (Canterbury) fought determinedly to beat G. Stratigopoulos. the present New Zealand champion, and S. Hampton, a New Zealand representative, was beaten by J. Hanra and Garland.
