JAPAN’S FIRST BATHYSCAPHE, which is nearing completion in a Kobe dockyard, has been named Shinkai (meaning “deep sea”) in a colourful ceremony. The name, chosen after a public contest, was submitted by a 12-year-old schoolboy, Toshihiko Onodera. The building of the bathyscaphe was undertaken jointly by the Japanese Science and Technology Agency and the Maritime Safety Agency. It will be used to survey the continental shelf round Japan.
