PULLETS DROWNED
Hundreds of pullets were drowned when floodwaters flowed through a brooder house in Port Hills Road at Heathcote on Thursday afternoon, and more birds died during the night. Mr A. E. Tate, of the Burwood Egg Farm, Ltd, said there were about 3300 birds in the house and about 1300 were left. Those which survived were likely to be weakened and could be sus- ■ ceptible to disease. Mr Tate said that the birds ■ had cost 45c each, including the chick levy, and would now be worth about 81 each. Poultry could be insured only against fire and lightning and the flock was insured for $12,000, he said. Mr Tate believes that the company will get no compensation for the loss of $2OOO. He has been told by the Heathcote County Council that unless the Government declares the area a disaster area and specifically states that payment will be made for stock losses, nothing can be done.
