Mission To Chathams

At the request of the Chatham Islands branch of Federated Farmers, two Wool Board officers and an officer of the Department of Agriculture will fly to the Chathams on Tuesday to give shearing and wool handling Instruction and advice about sheep breeding and selection.

The party will include Mr W. G. Bowen, the field director of the Wool Board, Mr C. Waite, chief shearing instructor of the Wool Board, and Mr L. Galloway, sheep and wool instructor of the Department of Agriculture, Christchurch. Mr Bowen will be in the Chathams for about a week, but the other officers will be there for two weeks. In the first week shearing instruction will be given and also instruction in preparation of wool for marketing and wool handling, and general advice will be given about shed procedure. In the second week Mr Waite will continue with shearing instruction and Mr Galloway will concentrate on flock improvement, advising farmers on breeding policy and sheep selection. During the visit one or two days will be spent on Pitt Island.
