Long-Term Planning

Speaking in Auckland yesterday, the ski-ing team manager, Mr S. H. Blakely, said that if New Zealand wanted to get its skiers into top world positions it would have to plan a long-term Iralning schedule. The French began a training scheme 11 years ago with a group including Killy; the British began a scheme four

years ago with nine girls, three of whom went to Olympics, and Canada started five years ago with a group of juniors aged nine to 11 years. “We can’t start a year before the Olympic Games and hope to have top-class skiers,” Mr Blakely said. “As in Rugby, we have to start with the young and train them right through.”
