MORE FOR RABBIT

Australian rabbits realised higher prices than New Zealand lamb on the Smithfield market, the secretary of the New Zealand Freezing Workers’ Association (Mr F. E. McNulty)'said yesterday. When he visited the market a fortnight ago, he said, rabbits were selling for 2s 3d to 2s 6d per lb, compared with New Zealand lamb prices of 2s 2d to 2s 4d pe' lb. Mr McNulty listed comparative lamb prices which New Zealand export representatives told him were typical: New Zealand lamb, 2s 2d to 2s 4d lb; English lamb, Is lOd to 2s lOd lb; early English lamb, up to 4s 7d lb. The day he visited the market 171 tons of New Zealand lamb was sold, compared with 114 tons of English lamb and nine tons of Australian lamb. Mr McNulty said it was noticeable how consistent was the demand for beef in Britain. He saw 535 tons of beef sold, compared with 303 tons of mutton and lamb. Of all the beef sold only 17 tons came from New Zealand.
