CHARGES AT PORTS
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, March 21. Because the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s charges are considered too high in comparison with those at Timaru, the Westland Dairy Co-operative Company at Hokitika intends to channel all its milk powder production through Timaru. The company will begin production of milk powder later this year. Yesterday, the company's secretary, Mr G. T. Bloomfield, said that the extra charge in railage to Timaru was more than saved when compared with the wharf and storage charges at Lyttelton. Some 1500 tons of milk powder will be kept in continuous storage at Timaru after the company begins production. “We have to keep five to six months production in storage to meet orders," he said. Mr Bloomfield said that the Lyttelton Harbour Board was not prepared to reduce costs. It seemed ridiculous that costs for storing butter, which was refrigerated, were less than those for storing the dry milk powder.
