Medical Caravans Built For Fiji
Two mobile medical units, designed and built by a Christchurch caravan builder, will be shipped to Fiji to be used by the Medical Department of Fiji for inoculation and prenatal care in the hinterland of the main islands.
The units, believed to be the first of their type designed in New Zealand, will be shipped from Lyttelton on March 26. They will be completed today. Both units have been set up like surgeries, according to the designer, Mr D. G. Kiiner, of Cresta Craft, Ltd. They contain a patient’s couch, sink, steriliser, hot water system, desk, filing sys-
tem, and air-cooling system. Each unit is lift long and 6ft 6in wide, and will be shipped completed. They have steel chassis, aluminium body, and mahogany fittings. There is no provision for accommodation but each unit could accommodate one person overnight on the patient's couch. Each unit cost SNZI27O. They have been designed to cope with rough roads and high rainfall. The firm has exported caravans to Australia and Pakistan, where they have been used by the Church Missionary Society for living accommodation and as medical units.
