Fire Damages Wool Bales

INVERCARGILL, March 20. Several dozen bales of wool were damaged in a fire in a hold of the Danish feighter Rikke Skou, at Bluff’s Island Harbour about midday today. Some of the bales were burned and others damaged by water. The fire is believed to have broken out between 11.50 a.m., when the hatch cohering the hold was sealed, and 1 p.m. when the fire was first noticed by a crew member.
Last Meeting.—The Rabbit Destruction Council—established in 1948 to eradicate rabbits and control the spread of opossums and wallabies — met for the last time yesterday to preside over its own dissolution. It will be replaced on April 1 by an Agricultural Pests Destruction Council, which will handle the destruction or control of all agricultural animal pests.
