PLAYERS OF THE YEAR
Two Canterbury cricketers have won national awards for their outstanding batting and bowling performances this season.
They are G. T. Dowling and R. C. Motz, who have been awarded the Redpath and Winsor Cups, respectively.
Dowling was the only possible choice for the batting award as his 968 runs was 68 more than B. A. G. Murray (Wellington). Moreover Murray, had a tour of Australia in which he scored more than 300 runs, whereas Dowling scored all his runs in the New Zealand season.
The only challenger to Motz was the Otago leg-spinner, J. C. Alabaster. However, while both did well in the tests against India, Motz took more wickets in the Plunket Shield games and was much more successful on the tour of Australia.
It is the second time each has won the trophy. Dowling also won the Redpath Cup last season and Motz won the Winsor Cup two years ago.
