CHILDREN’S ROAD CODE
A simplified road code especially prepared for primapr schoolchildren is being distributed to schools throughout New Zealand this term.
Several thousand copies are at present being issued in Canterbury, Marlborough and on the West Coast.
The booklet, “Children’s Road Code,” was designed by the superintendent of traffic instruction (Mr J. L. Grant) and the former superintendent (Mr W. G. Leatham). It is being issued by the Transport Department. The advice given in the booklet is written in such simple language as “Never chase a ball or playmate on to the road,” “Do not walk too close to the kerb,” “Ask your father to check your cycle at least once a month,” and so on.
There are hints for cyclists, on traffic and pointsman’s signals, how to cross the road, on school patrols, and travelling by bus, each point being clearly illustrated. The booklet will be used by traffic instructors visiting schools, and copies will also be given to teachers and for classroom libraries.
